BY CALIFORNIA ASSEMBLY LEADER

Pictured above (left to right) California State Assembly Majority Leader James E. Rogan presents a "Certificate of Recognition" on behalf of the California Assembly to Richard H. Breithaupt, Jr. The presentation was made at the Society's Saratoga/Yorktown Day Luncheon held this past October 5, 1996, in Pasadena, California. Mr. Breithaupt was recognized for his dedication and community service during his tenure as President of the Sons of the Revolution in the State of California in 1995 and 1996. Speaking at the October gathering, Assembly Leader Rogan strongly complimented the Society for its contributions to the overall community here in California. He was very gracious with his praise for Mr. Breithaupt and singled out his record of commitment and genuine service. Of particular significance was the Society's successful staging of California's involvement in the 33rd Annual National Let Freedom Ring Ceremony last July 4 that incluyded 47 co-sponsors statewide in over 500 ceremonies around the state ringing bells of freedom before more than 5,200 guests.

Assembly Leader Rogan held his first public office when only 33 years old. Governor George Deukmejian appointed him to the municipal court bench, making James Rogan the youngest sitting judge in California. In a May 1994 special election, Rogan won a seat in the State Assembly. He was elected Assembly Majority Leader in January 1996. In November, 1996 Assembly Leader Rogan was elected to the United States Congress and now holds the Congressional seat vacated by The Hon. Carlos Moorhead in California's 27th District.

USS Jefferson City (SSN-759)
Hosts Society Members

A group of Society officers, led by Vice President Mark J. Denger and President Emeritus John R. Justice, were the luncheon guests of Captain Jonathan W. Greenert, USN, Commodore of Submarine Squadron Eleven, at the U. S. Navy Submarine Base at Ballast Point in San Diego this past December 10, 1996. At the request of then Society President Richard H. Breithaupt, Jr., Vice President Denger presented Commodore Greenert with the President's Commendation Award for his service to the nation. The group was then privileged to a rarely offered tour hosted by Commander Marty Smith, the Commanding Officer, and the men of the USS Jefferson City (SSN-759), a modern nuclear fast-attack submarine. The improved Los Angeles class fast-attack submarines of this new design (688I) are the most feared and lethal weapons in the oceans of the world today.

Joining Society members for the tour were Vice Admiral B. M. Kauderer, USN, Ret.; Vice Admiral Harry Schrader, USN, Ret.; Vice Admiral J. H. Nicholson, USN, Ret.; and Rear Admiral John E. Lee, USN, Ret. After the three hour visit aboard the warship and speaking on behalf of the group, President Emeritus Justice stated, "While I was very impressed with the extremely sophisticated weaponry, I was even more impressed with the battle-readiness, technical competence, and espirit-de-corps of the entire crew of the USS Jefferson City. After spending a little time with these men, who are very professional and committed to helping to maintain peace by their vigilance, I developed a renewed faith in what we're all about as a nation of free people." Vice President Mark Denger, a former submariner who served on the nuclear fast-attack submarine USS Permit (SSN-594)led the group. He remarked, "In this era of military down-sizing, it would be a mistake to curtail our submarine force which is truly a vital part of our current and future defense posture." [Editor's Note:  Society Vice President Mark Denger presently serves as the Los Angeles County Representative of the U. S. Submarine Veterans.].
